RA 602 CA for the Most Severe High Temperature Applications

 

RA 602 CA® is an alloy for the highest temperature applications, in most environments. This is why we call RA 602 CA the high temperature powerhouse alloy.

Additions of aluminum (Al) and yttrium (Y) ensure the most adherent surface oxide, underneath the outer chrome oxide layer.  The combination of zirconium (Zr), titanium (Ti), and carbon (C) produce submicron sized carbides which reside in and pin the grain boundaries in place.  As a result, this alloy shows acceptable oxidation at temperatures up to 2250°F.  It also exhibits excellent creep strength in every application tested.

 

In vacuum furnace rod baskets, RA 602 CA has been used at a temperature of  2285°F, without the need for straightening for 30 cycles.  All other alloys tried required straightening between 5 and 10 cycles.  By elimination of downtime cycles and extensive straightening, the cost of using one RA 602 CA basket will show considerable cost savings compared to the multiple purchases of lesser alloys over the life of the RA 602 CA basket.

 

RA 602 CA radiant tubes, with only a 1/8 inch wall, have been successfully used in carburizing furnaces for up to 9 years, with proper preventative maintenance.  The conditions are 1.6% carbon potential and 1750°F.  Cast tubes with both 5/16 inch and 3/8 inch thick walls typically last approximately 4 years in similar environments, while 601 alloy tubes with a 1/8 inch wall typically lasts up to 2 years.

 

In muffle applications, 601 and HR120® muffles last up to 2 years at temperatures in the 2100 to 2200°F range.  Based on current application with RA 602 CA in service for 2 years with no roof deflection, we project that this muffle should easily last 4 years and possibly 6 years.  A second muffle installation is expected to be installed in 2017.

 

In aluminizing, furnace retorts running up to 2200°F have exhibited a life of 1 year.  Retorts constructed from heavier wall 600 alloy would only last 1 to 2 months.
